PAINTING & DRAWING
Of late, my thoughts have been oriented around the Structuralist currents found within the Modernism of the early 20th century and a desire to understand the cultural currents that brought about these movements as well as the internal and external contradictions that caused their demise. Underlying this pursuit is my sense that the current socio-political landscape mirrors this era. I don’t make this point to suggest that our art should mimic that of a similar preceding era, but I believe that we must learn from the successes and shortcomings of the past in order to pave a path towards a better future.
In line with this, my work has been shaped by collage and Suprematist painting. Through a minimalist approach, I seek to embellish the conventions of traditional fine art mediums rather than shying away from them. I contest the notion that art contains some greater spiritual significance or capacity to incite monumental societal transformation. Instead, I want to celebrate and meditate on contemporary painting as a vestige of the unique manner of institutionalization afforded for specific types of craftsmanship and decorative traditions throughout time.
