Grief is personal. It is tender. It is quiet. It is loud. It is painful. It is numbing. It is that dull ache in our chest that just doesn’t seem to go away. It challenges us in a complex way. Not just in how we respond to a profound loss, but how we respond to the changes that follow. When we are united together in our grief, though, there is a sense of community and shared understanding that grounds us. Even when facing our individual grievances, there is almost always a sense of community, an unwavering sense of togetherness.
We as people are resilient, not just for the sake of others, but for ourselves as well. And with that resilience, there is the compassion that we have for one another. A sense of solidarity and intimacy, even with the presence of our grief that we are often forced to grapple with regardless of what is happening in our lives. There is no timeline, no deadline. It is in grief that we mourn what we know and the fear of what we don’t know. However, even within that familiar, or unfamiliar pain that comes with loss, we somehow find affection and companionship, engulfing ourselves in the hidden warmth that lies within that uncertainty.
