PHOTO MEDIA ART
Walking the streets of Chattanooga at night, I document different styles of graffiti, such as tags, throw-ups, and wildstyle pieces, and place them into a controlled grid. By photographing in black and white with flash, I remove all color and focus on the raw marks and artistic formal qualities: line, shape, and form. I use the structure of a photographic typology to slow down the way graffiti is seen and understood. A photographic typology is a visual classification system that allows one to analyze, categorize, and document the ordinary, or changes in, a built environment. Through repetition and classification, I want to create a space where graffiti can be read not as noise or damage, but as a quiet archive of presence, identity, and urban expression.
